The United States is the world's largest agricultural producer. The Great Plains labeled as the "breadbasket of the world" with many areas enjoying good soil and good rainfall. The CIA World Factbook notes that .7% of the US workforce was involved in farming, fishing or forestry. However, it notes that the main agricultural products include " wheat, corn, other grains, fruits, vegetables, cotton; beef, pork, poultry, dairy products; fish; forest products".
Egypt has one of the oldest agricultural industries in the world. Its agriculture depends entirely on the fertile Nile Basin with the remainder of the country being desert. There are productivity problems in agriculture with the agricultural workforce making up 32% of the labor force but with agriculture forming only 15% of its gross domestic product (what it produces each year). The CIA World Factbook notes that it produces the following " cotton, rice, corn, wheat, beans, fruits, vegetables; cattle, water buffalo, sheep, goats".
The completion of the Aswan High Dam in 1971 and the resultant Lake Nasser altered the traditional place of the Nile River in the agriculture and ecology of Egypt. A rapidly-growing population, limited arable land, and dependence on the Nile all continue to overtax resources and stress the economy. However, warm weather and the water from the Nile does allow several seasons a year.
The United States is a major supplier of wheat, corn, and soybean products to Egypt, almost all through commercial sales. Egypt is the U.S.'s largest market for wheat sales. U.S. agricultural sales to Egypt total $1 billion annually. U.S. food assistance programs to Egypt ended in 1992 as Egypt became more prosperous. Egypt continues to receive modest food assistance through the World Food Program and from France.
