A wild strawberry (Fragaria vesca) may be toxic only in case it grows in a polluted area (e.g. near a road) or takes toxic sustances (e.g. heavy metals, pesticides, etc) from soil or it may be dangerous if contaminated with microbes, parasite eggs.

Not only berries are edible, but also it is possible to make a nice tea with leaves of wildberries (especially good in mix with some others), they should be collected young, before flowering for good aroma.

ADDITION: I remarked one American website, which mentions that "Beware of strawberry-like plants with yellow flowers. These are not poison, but have a tendency to upset your stomach. Some people call them Snake Berries." At http://www.indianspringherbs.com/wildstrawberries....

The website looks really serious (if to read about other plants). It is really interesting what is the reason of yeallow flowers. Maybe that is genetic mutation, a new variety or even another species. Maybe flowers are are coloured from something in the soil, some nature minerals, unhealthy for people. Very interesting, really. I have not been in America.

They are certainly edible, and make a wonderful jelly if you can find enough of them. We like to walk in the grass where they grow and eat the newly ripened ones. We do not use chemicals on our grass.

I used to sit on a hillside and eat wild strawberries all afternoon. Had a dog with me and he would wait for me to pick them and share with him. Never hurt either one of us.
