What is the joke about yellow spandex with reference to the X-Men movies?
The standard comeback to complaints about the black leather costumes on the X-Men movies is "Would you prefer yellow spandex?" I never saw either movie but I love the old comix from the early 1980s (where nobody wore yellow spandex) so could somebody please explain this? Was it a line in one of the movies or what?

In the comics, Wolverine wears yellow and blue spandex sometimes. In the movie, Wolverine sarcastically made a comment about wearing yellow spandex in the first movie.
During the 80s, though, his costume was orange and brown.

As everyone said before... it just pretains to his original costume that he had when X-Men first was created. His costume as well as his personality developed as time grew on. They used it in the movie, due to the fact that most of the avid readers would get a chuckle out of it. Below I posted a link for you to see the old get-up. Hope that helps! :)

Wolverine's old outfit was bright lemon yellow in the comic books and old cartoons.

It's a line in the 1st movie. Wolverine makes fun of every one wearing black leather, and the line is Cyclops' response.
