Some of the more mundane technical aspects you have mentioned may arise, like holographic images for books. Scrambling atoms and then re-assembling them is way futuristic and seemingly less likely.

Razor R correctly points out that life on earth, which is the only life we currently have to sample, is subject to periodic mass extinctions. There are lots of ways to die, from A bombs to plague (man-made or natural), asteroids to who-knows-what. It would be an interesting variable to interject a malevolant alien race into the picture, although unlikely. Certainly, mankind would be forced to unite as never before. It would probably take somtehing that radical to cause mankind to attain other goals of a future society, assuming we prevailed over the aliens.

I do believe I can see a future in which the mining of minerals and ores depleted on earth could take place on asteroids and moons in the solar system. We are already signing people up for mere commercial spaceflight as tourists. It would not be a huge stretch to envision commercial exploitation of the solar system's natural resources. The lure of profit will get things done far more quickly and efficiently than any government space program - unless there's a militarily expedient reason. Where mining occurs, space colonies will surely follow on Mars and the Moon.

It should be interesting to see it all unfold.

well it would be very long from now(in about a few hundred years) we will probable achieve some of the points above. but the bottom line is that this planet will probably face a natural catastrophe wiping out almost all life. its the way it's been and it's the way it will be until the end of all life or the planet.

That the environment be peaceful, that the water be drinkable, that food be plentiful and that we live right, ensuring that animals and plants are cared for as well.
