I think actually choosing them, and thanking them in the comments, is good enough.
I really don't like it when you give a great answer that exactly answers a specific question (not an opinion type question), and the person doesn't pick an answer at all. It goes to voting in a couple of weeks, but that is very disappointing.

I don't think it is necessary. You have given your help, and they have acknowledged it. End of story.
*edit*
Sorry, I thought you meant if you gave an answer and received a best answer award. If you ask a question and someone helped you out, sure you can email them, it would be a nice gesture.

Well, sometimes I write a thank you in "comment" field on that site thanking them. I don't know what the proper etiquette is for being chosen. I personally don't expect a thank you for my choosing someone's best answer.
- How do you think about the answers? You can sign in to vote the answer.

I think it's nice. I've gotten voted as best answer before and have followed up to see if they had anymore questions. I've even had a few people do that for me.

No. They get an email, and as long as you put a nice message as to why you chose them, it is fine.

There are some people whose e-mail address might be something else and they wrote their friends. So people might wander what you are thanking them for.

i was actually thinking about that today... yes i think that's a good idea, maybe after thanking someone they might contact you and then you never know what people you'll meet(",)
