I have 2 mac computers .Laptop and desktop. I have an external hd that can not be detected . what is wrong ?

The external hd is detected on my laptop but not on my desktop. Mind you I have 2 macs. Help ! I have double checked. when plugged in my laptop , the hd icon shows up. But it doesn't on my desktop. I am sure it is something simple . I have had no problems in the past.

Is the drive USB or firewire? You may have a bad port on the desktop. To check this:

go to the apple menu in the top left corner

choose about this mac. when the window pops up, select more info...

    this opens System profiler

click on usb and firewire to see if they register. If it says nothing, there's your problem.

If all ports are working, try this:

go to applications - utilities and open disk utility

plug in your drive and see if it appears

if it still doesn't appear, choose mount drive from the menus at the top while in disk utilityq

Could be an out of date driver on your desktop.

Did you have to install anything on your computer when you connected it? If so, then I would suggest uninstalling and reinstalling it. If that doesn't work, then check the manual for it see if it says anything, then if that still doesn't help try contacting the manufacturer of the HD, see if they can help
