Depressed Parakeet?????
I purchased a Parakeet from a local pet store for my daughter about a week ago. Since I brought it home, it has been depressed, or so it seems. It eats and takes water but won't interact with our pet cockatiel. The cockatiel is very gently and has lived with parakeets before. How can I encourage our new parakeet to perk up and play with the other bird?

It may take as long as a month for your parakeet to adjust to it's new home :-). My tiels live with 3 budgies and they get along fine. The youngest, Blessings, took about 2 weeks to interact with the other birds and another 2 weeks before the budgie would officially chase the quail out of the way at feeding time. Now everyone tolerates each other and if someone decides to be a brat, the arguments are pretty minor.
It's also possible that your little guy is feeling sick. Keep an eye on them. Watch out for a bird that's fluffed up, has funny shaped turds and has trouble standing on one leg. A sick bird will also sleep a lot. Ideally birds shold be quarantined for 3 weeks. I usually do 2 and a half weeks.
When illness is ruled out, there's several games you could try. The first is to have the two bird on a table or large perch and offer the cockatiel and Budgie their favorite treats in separate bowls. Move the bowls together over several days. Reward both birds for interacting with each other and perhaps encourage the tiel to play its favorite games in the presence of the Budgie. make or buy a play stand and have bowls filled with juice in them. You want the two birds to know being with each other is a lot of fun ^.^
I hope I've helped somewhat. Good luck with you new guy!

Since you just got the parakeet, it will be frightened in its new home. I think you should separate them. So just be patient cause i had 2 parakeets and only one was always chirping and happy. Later on that parakeet died and the other one was HAPPY. She was just kept chirping whenever she saw the sun, heard loud music, or when a lot of people were talking at once. So the best thing is to separate them and if the parakeet is happy then try to put it with the cockatiel. If it doesn't work with the cockatiel then it just wanted to be alone in its own cage.

if you JUST got it, it can be scared. you would be scared too if you just got put into a new home with people you didn't ever see. walk calmly around his cage and just be patient. its going to take time for your bird friend to get used to his new home so just wait. and just because your cockatiel might like the parakeet, doesn't mean that the parakeet likes the cockatiel. so just be patient. good luck!!

I've known that parakeets get along with cocktails but this is odd. Check for change in color of diarrhea and the consistency. If its wet then give it vitamins (for depression) and then see if anything works. Or else they do get along with them very well. I think it's just the new thing getting along, after a while it may start to bond. (If anything doesn't work...get one more parakeet or try a vet.)

it will take a bit of time as it is in a new enviroment. mayby you could seperate the new bird from the established bird as it mayby picking on it without you realising.then slowly bring them together till its happy.it is after all in the other birds territory so it has to establish it its spot in the pecking order.birds a very smart they can hide a lot from people it could even be sick.keep an eye on it and if it dosnt get better i would take it to the vet.

You should try talking to him(don't call me crazy)and try to encourage him to play. And if that doesn't work he just doesn't want to interact with your pet cocktail and if that is what he chooses to do , you can't really force him to play with your cocktail.
