How do you get rid of ants (I have them everywhere they get in our cupboards and on the floor)?

Also they get in the cat's food. I even bought ant traps and they don't seem to work, I don't want to use harsh chemicals especially around our plates and our kitty's food. This is irritating and I also don't want to spend a whole lot of money killing the jerks. These are little black ants. They seem to like Apple Jacks.

This is going to sound ridiculous but I grew up watching my grandma doing this and it worked every summer. Ants are little unwanted pests and I hate them!!!

My grandma would peel a cucumber and leave the peelings behind like canisters, microwaves, bread bins....whatever. Just throw a few behind those things to hide them and I swear the ants will leave your kitchen! I have even seen her put them under her bathroom sink for those pesky bathroom ones! But trust me, it works and its so much cheaper than Raid or other nasty smelly chemicals. Oh, leave the peels out about a week. the will shrivel up and stuff but they are still ok. Something about the oil in them or something, she would tell me. Anyways, just change the peels when they get yucky and you will be rid of your ants. Good Luck!

I put bay leaves in the bottom of my cupboards and near outside doors. For some reason ants do not like the scent.

I have also read that ants will not cross a chalk line. I do not know if it is true because the bay leaves have always worked for me.

    Good luck.

I answered this one a while back for another asker. If the cucumber peelings don't work, I've heard bay leaves repel them. You need to trim all trees and bushes that are touching your house as well.

Here is a product that is NOT a heavy chemical that we have been using to great effect-

We have big black ones and small ones too. After we put this stuff out, the ants began to become obviously ill, then died. They gather round it and protect it like it's gold. I rarely see any big ones anymore, and the small ones are nearly gone. They eat this stuff like candy and bring it back to the nest and feed the young and the Queen.

I understand your problem - mine like Cheerios. I've bought some of the Raid ant traps and placed them in the trail (from where they are getting in)... this has worked some. The most effective thing that I've done, besides spray them with Windex and Mean Green is to sweep them up and flush them down the toilet. GOOD LUCK!

you probably won't pick this cause you don't want to hear it,

but you do better leaving the poison alone and trying to keep your eating areas cleaner. put away the pet food after about 15 minutes. wash the dishes after eating wipe up the sinks and put up the apple jacks.

when i see the little lines of ants, i run the hot water as hot as i can touch it, over a sponge, wipe the whole line up and rinse with the hot water. and repeat. it kills them and cleans the dirty counter that they are attracted to in one fell swoop.

it's about management. if they live under your house they always will.

try to spray Raid in places that they get into your home and all around the outside

or have the proffesionnals come and do their job, they spray stuff that is safe around pets and food
