Did you know that MORMONS DON'T PRACTICE POLYGAMY???
I'm a Mormon. I have been all my life.
I promise you all, from the absolute bottom of my heart, that Mormons do not practice polygamy.
They did for a short time, when men in the church had been killed by angry mobs in the 1800s, and women had no one to provide for their families.
In 1890, over 100 years ago, there was an official declaration issued by the church stating that polygamy was no longer a practice of the church, and it would not be supported in any way by the church.
Isn't that great??? It is to me! I am the only wife of my only husband, and we have only 3 kids!
There are some splinter groups that practice polygamy who claim to be members of the church. They are not. Whenever you hear about polygamy, rest assured they are not Mormons!
Does anyone else have any other questions about things they've heard about the Mormon church? I would be happy to answer them for you. Look for your answers in the additional information section of the question.
somedude and marine -
You're right, except that they aren't Mormons. They are splinter groups who have no actual affiliation with the church. They aren't members. They can say they are all they want, but it isn't true. Thanks for your input!
httnmrtt - Is the Catholic church responsible for every little splinter group who leaves their church and starts their own?
You have your history partly correct - It became a real big issue for the church to make a public pronouncement denouncing polygamy prior to Utah being admitted to the Union. However, polygamy was not illegal until that same period. When congress declared polygamy illegal, polygamy ceased immediately. It has always been the practice of the church to comply with the laws of the land.
In my ancestry, we have polygamy. Personally I think it is weird and creepy, but it seems to have had its place at some point in history.
Also, polygamy was practiced in the Old Testament. You'll have to take that one up with a higher authority, as I have nothing to say about it! LOL
Brandi G - I haven't seen it, but I understand it is just wild. I've known people who are polygamists. They mostly seem like normal people, but there are some groups who dress like pioneers and stuff. Crazy!
katybug - Thanks, you're nice.
bluefirewitch - Yeah, there is a lot of really disgusting stuff that goes on in polygamist communities. They are really closed off communities, mostly, and it's hard for legal authorities to get in to prosecute, especially because the women can be really controlled sometimes, and they're afraid to speak up for themselves. I had a friend from highschool who ran away from a polygamist colony in Mexico with her mom. She tells some awful stories.
frankyglitz - You have loads of questions, so this may take more than one "add details" space. I want to be totally open with you and answer everything to the best of my ability, so bear with me, ok? And I don't think any of your questions seem like an attack. It's ok. I'm happy to answer your questions.
First, you need to know that we believe that revelation has never ceased. We believe that God speaks to modern prophets in the same way he did in ancient times, and that we have the right to receive personal revelation in our daily lives.
Ok, here's the scoop on the Book of Mormon: There was a prophet named Lehi who lived in Jerusalem in about 600 BC. The Lord told him to preach repentence to the people or the city would be destroyed. Long story short, everyone rejected his prophecies, and he took his family into the wilderness to escape destruction. After years of travelling, the Lord told them to build a boat and they sailed off to lands unknown, which turned out to be . . .
the Americas. They kept records of the goings on in their civilizations, just as in ancient Israel, and the records were passed down through the generations. Following Christ's life, death and resurrection in Israel, he appeared to the people in the Americas (see John 10:16 - "other sheep I have which are not of this fold . . .") and established his church there, as he had done in Israel. After he spent some time with them, he ascended into heaven again and they had several generations of peace and happiness. Ultimately, though, people fell into wickedness. The majority of the inhabitants of the land were destroyed in a huge war. One of the men who kept the records was named Mormon, and he abridged many of the records. When he was done, he gave the records to his son, Moroni, who then witnessed the final destruction of the civilization. Prior to his death, he hid the records under a stone on a hill named Cummorah. That was the end of that for awhile. Many, many years passed . . .
In the year 1820, a young boy named Joseph Smith found himself in quite a quandry. He was really trying hard to find a church to join, but was having difficulty finding one that answered all his questions. He read in James 1:5 "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God . . .", so he decided to do just that. He went to the woods near his home in Palmyra, NY, and kneeled to pray. He began to pray, when suddenly he was completely engulfed in darkness. He could not call out or escape from the evil that gripped him. Just when he was certain that he was sure to die, he saw a pillar of light descending from heaven. Within the pillar of light, he saw two people. They introduced themselves as God the Father, and his Son, Jesus the Christ. At length, they told him to join none of the churches, but that he would be instrumental in re-establishing the Lord's gospel on the earth. This was something that would take several years to accomplish. Over time, other wondrous things took place. . .
At one point, an angel named Moroni (the same one who had hidden the ancient records in the Hill Cummorah) appeared to Joseph and told him that when he was ready, he would be taken to the place where the records were hidden. He would be permitted to take the plates and some other objects that were hidden with them and he would be able to translate the records and bring them forth to the world as another testament of Jesus Christ. All of that took place. The golden plates are those ancient records. The Lord's church was established. All kinds of good stuff has taken place in the years since then.
I know not all angels are good. I know that Satan himself has legions of angels that seek to destroy us by pulling us away from the teachings of Jesus. Modern revelation has taught us about that, and has taught us how to defend against such deception.
Regarding polygamy, I've addressed that extensively above. Hopefully that has answered your questions.
We absolutely believe in . . .
the Bible. We also recognize that the Bible has been translated countless times by countless people. We realize that people make mistakes, and that errors and omissions may have been made over time, and that different interpretations of the same text can alter its original meaning entirely. This is our only concern with the Bible. We believe the Bible to be the word of God, as far as it is translated correctly. We use the King James version of the Bible, and have some instances where modern revelation has helped us to understand the existing text, with a few words here or there that have been changed or omitted. For the most part, it is identical in meaning and even in text. You would be amazed at how much a sentence can change in content simply because the word "of" or something similar has been left out. It's that simple.
I hope I've been helpful to you. If you have any more questions, feel free to email me.

The Mormon people are taught that plural marriage is still practiced in heaven and will be practiced in the millennium.
The doctrine of polygamy is still in the Mormon scriptures, Doctrine and Covenants, section 132.
Mormons are instructed not to practice polygamy during this life but the practice will be permitted in "Mormon heaven."
TODAY if a Mormon man outlives his first wife (after having a temple marriage) he can marry again in the temple. This would guarantee him two wives in "Mormon heaven."
LDS Apostle Bruce R. McConkie says ... the Lord frequently did command his ancient saints to practice plural marriage ... the whole history of ancient Israel was one in which plurality of wives was the divinely accepted and approved order of matrimony. Millions of those who entered this order have, in and through it, gained for themselves eternal exaltation in the highest heaven of the celestial world... the Prophet and leading brethren were commanded to enter into the practice, which they did in all virtue and purity of heart ... plural marriage was openly taught and practiced until the year 1890. At that time conditions were such that the Lord by revelation withdrew the command to continue the practice.... Obviously the holy practice will commence again after the Second Coming of the Son of Man and the ushering in of the millennium....
Any who pretend or assume to engage in plural marriage in this day, when the one holding the keys has withdrawn the power by which they are performed, are guilty of gross wickedness. They are living in adultery, have already sold their souls to Satan, and (whether their acts are based on ignorance or lust or both) they will be damned in eternity (Mormon Doctrine, 1958, pp.522-23).
Is it any wonder that many Mormon people are confused over the practice of polygamy? They are taught that Joseph Smith entered polygamy in "virtue and purity of heart," yet they are taught that if they follow his example they are living in "adultery."
John J. Stewart stated: "... the restoration of the Church and Gospel of Jesus Christ, is to prepare for the second coming of the Savior, which is nigh at hand; to help usher in His great millennial reign, when the Gospel in its fulness including plural marriage, will be lived by worthy members of the Church" (Brigham Young and His Wives, p.73).
LDS Apostle Orson Pratt once stated: "Does not everything that is consistent and reasonable, and everything that agrees with the Bible show that plurality of wives must exist after the resurrection? It does ..." (Journal of Discourses, vol. 14, pp.244-45).
Since the Mormon people are taught that polygamy was right in Joseph Smith's time and that it will be practiced in heaven, is it any wonder that many of them are entering into the practice today? As long as the Mormon leaders continue to publish Joseph Smith's revelation on polygamy (Doctrine and Covenants, 132), there will, no doubt, be many people who will enter into the practice. They cannot completely repudiate this revelation, however, without repudiating their doctrine concerning temple marriage as the two doctrines are found in the same revelation.

I can't ask a question w/out sounding like I'm attacking you. I don't necessarily understand why your church claims Jesus appeared to Joseph Smith here in America. What's this about golden plates? Who is this angel Moroni? Did you know an "angel" appeared to Mohommed and supposedly dictated the Koran. Not all angels are good.
Even if Mormons today do not practice polygomy, the church founder did. The Mormons teach that the Bible is not the ultimate authority and is missing certain truths. I've always understood the Mormon religion to be a cult.

i don't get it the two, Jaxon. And Pinetree had basically marginal information in his comments. Mormon adult adult males can basically be sealed to a diverse spouse AFTER the 1st spouse's dying. they are able to't be sealed to a diverse female on a similar time as presently married to a residing spouse. actuality. with a bit of luck Pinetree gets this stunning next time. yet another actuality: The prepare of polygamy interior the early days of the Latter-day Saint church (enable's internet get puzzled with RLDS or FLDS - they are no longer a similar) got here as divine revelation from the Lord. there have been many solid motives in the back of it, of course, with the aid of fact the Lord is all-understanding and smart. The prepare became stopped in 1890, so i do no longer understand why there is lots fuss over it nevertheless. it is not accepted interior the Latter-day Saint church and if everybody is caught to be practising it they are going to be excommunicated. everybody who claims to be a Mormon and practices polygamy isn't a member of the LDS church. yet another actuality: The prepare of polygamy became first observed in biblical situations. enable's see.... Abraham and Moses for starters had diverse better halves. And do you be responsive to why? It became with the aid of divine authority, consequently, the Lord approved it, basically as in Joseph Smith's and Brigham youthful's time. So people who do the ridiculing of the early saints interior the church and polygamy and even have self belief interior the Bible are basically hypocrites. solid question, Jaxon. i do no longer think of human beings will ever enable it bypass, as maximum people who hate Mormons will use something and each thing to objective to destroy the actual gospel and turn human beings far off from it. they are devil's kit and that they do no longer additionally be responsive to it. How unhappy.

I thought that there were fringe groups that still believed in Polygamy. I saw a documentary on it. I'm okay with Polygamy, but some of these folks were inot incest and that is gross. Also, it didn't seem to me that the women knew any better. Like they were afraid to speak up. That is what I didn't like.

As you said yourself, "There are some splinter groups that practice polygamy who claim to be members of the church." The Mormons did practice polygamy until Utah was admitted to the Union and the LDS leadership had to rescind polygamy in order for admission to occur. The church did not clean up their act until forced to do so by the law of the land. As for the splinter groups, it's up to the mother church to clean up its own image, including all her bastard step-children.
