Generally this is true, though if you get a group of girls together they can be pretty rowdy.
I don't know the actual psychological explanation besides that we're just wired differently. But if girls were as overt as boys, there wouldn't be any mystique around us. We would just be another one of the guys and not every guy wants that in a woman.

That is a rather unlearned statement.
Statics in the introvert population; male takes larger number them female. You met an introvert girl that is not really mean that girls are more introvert then boys.
Here is a statement I found in a website:
"...Introversion is not a measure of shyness. It is possible to have shy Extraverts and assertive Introverts. Shyness has more to do with an awareness of physical sensations. Either Extraverts or Introverts making a speech before a crowd may feel nervous about the situation and try to avoid the task. Sometimes they may feel nervous and do it anyway. Some Introverts can be quite comfortable speaking before a group..."
When we see someone who appear quite, he/she may not nessarily shy. Intoverts cannot be discern by casual observation or a glance. But it requirs time and efforts to do so.

It's down to nature - in nature the male must "show-off" to attract a mate - be it through strength, bright colours, vocal etc. And the female "selects her mate".
Its the same for humans, but more complicated, because of peer pressure.

it is not a sex based personality trait at all. introversion is completely based on each persons' preference. some people like to surround themselves with other people and others enjoy being alone. it is different from one person to the next. girl or boy has nothing to do with it at all.

it depends on the person not the gender because many girls are also extrovert and adventurous same as males and there are also males who are introvert.
