What are those big plastic balls for, hanging on high voltage electric wires in remote areas?
These are balls about 1 or 2 feet in diameter, with different colors hanging on electric wires.

The red balls collect static electricity in the air and eliminates even the slight possibilities of shorthing two separate wires that could cause a massive blackout in the region.
The gray balls emit high frequency sounds that are very disturbing to the birds so that the birds do not sit on the wires and short them.
Both colors have transmitters that alert the pilots that fly by also.

They are used to warn aircraft of power lines.
Did you know they have fluorscent lights in them that pick up the electric & magnetic field coming from the lines themselves and glow so they can be seen even at night?

Also found near some hospitals to alert the medivac helicopters about the power lines.

Those are for people to see from the air so they don't fly helicopters and stuff into. You see them a lot near water sources (rivers and lakes) where copters might dip for water to fight forest fires.

They are used next to airports to show pilots where the cables are and avoid a collision
