I had my first colonoscopy in February 2006. It wasn't painful at all. For me, the worst part is the anticipation of the whole thing - the uncertainty of it all. The prep is not too bad if you use the Visicol tablets. You take about 28 tablets altogether. 4 tablets every 15 minutes with 8 ounces of water. My husband has done both the gallon liquid (which is very very salty) and he has done the tablets also. He said the tablets are the way to go! Anyway, I was in a hospital gown with the opening in the back. They let me leave on my bra and I brought my own snuggly booties to keep my feet warm. After I got settled on the examination table, they covered me a very warm blanket - it was very cozy. They try to make you as comfortable as possible. From my research, patient privacy and dignity is an important part of the medical profession's training and although the hospital staff does colonoscopies on a regular basis - they do respect your privacy and will only uncover the area long enough to insert the colonoscope and then the doctor will be watching the monitor while he guides the colonocope gently through your colon. I don't remember any pain or waking up at all. Good Luck and feel free to ask me any other questions you have. I wrote a paper of my whole experience if you're interested in reading it. It's a woman's perspective.

The worst part of a colonscopy is drinking the gallon of salty liquid the day before, if you have to do that. (Colite) If that is prescribed for you, then add lemonade crystal lite to it and the taste will be much better. Make sure you are scheduled for first thing in the morning before anyone else. The machinery is cleanest then. Unfortunately this is not a joke and has been on the news several times. The procedure will be over before you know it and then you wake up. They give you a shot to put you under. Usually if you have polyps, they remove them at the same time and do a biopsy. Am very familiar wth the procedure, have relatives that have endoscopy every 5 years. You will be naked except for a hospital gown that opens in the back. Good Luck to you.

The procedure doesn't hurt at all. The worst part about the whole thing is the prep. Make sure you are close to a bathroom after you drink the stuff that cleans you out! But as far as the procedure, you are on drugs so you don't feel a thing . You are laying on your side and you are covered and you are kinda out of it. When I was done all I wanted to do was eat something and take a nap. It is really nothing to be afraid of.

Sounds like a lot of different experiences out there between being knocked out, awake, pills, IVs, etc. Geesh I think the IV would be the worst part, I hate those things. I've known people that just took some pills and were awake and chatting through the whole thing.

You will be completely knocked out, so you won't feel a thing. You will be mostly covered revealing only your...ahem...rear portions.
Regardless, it's a million times better than colon cancer, and if your colonoscopy looks good, you won't need another one for 10 years (usually).

Gosh, anal penetration some 5 to 6 feet?? That doesn't sound like a carnival ride I would buy a ticket for.

The preparation is what kicks your a##. You have to do prep till clear. That means youll have to be on CLEAR LIQUID DIET DAY BEFORE after midnight nothing by mouth the in morning take a high sodium enema. Then they put IV in your arm before the test they also give you vercid and pain killers in IV. Vercid will help you not remember it the procedure

Well, it's done under local anaesthesia, so you wouldn't normally feel anything. The inner mucosa of the bowels are not sensitive to pain, so once the guide is in, there ir nothing else to fear. And of course your upper part of body will be under clothes.
