Rear hatch on a 1990 jeep?
I bought a used jeep and the rear hatch does not seem to be able to lock now. I have a friend that has a 1989 jeep with the same door and hers does the same thing. Does anybody out there know the trick to getting it to lock? The vehicle needs a bit of work still and the lock is a little rusty, but I can't even get a key into it. The button pushes and the hatch opens eaisly.

Yes, use some WD-40 or even better get some stuff called Knocker Loose(local auto parts store) and try to spray it in the key hole. Also try spraying it on the locking mechanism its self(you may have to pull off the interior trim piece. If its too rusted you will have to buy a new lock.

I had one, the hatch or tailgate is made of fiberglass and the latch assembly has a tendency to break-down the fiberglass where it bolts to the hatch. check it there and see if that is the problem if it is then you may have to reinforce the area with some webbing and resin and realign the latch. p.s. try some WD- 40 to free up the lock and latch assy.
