If so what kind of gun or guns should you have?

I think you should have several. A Mossburg 590 12 guage is good. You should have a simi auto hand gun, and either an AR 15 or a AK-47.

The question you need to ask yourself first is do you want to be a victim?
Then the second thing you should do is get some basic self-defense training.
After this you need to ask yourself if you could kill somebody. It is a decision that you should make before you take the next step. You can't make that decision when something happens because you WILL hessitate.
A 12 gauge shotgun (pump or semi-auto) is best for home defense. Right now I have birdshot, but most guys I have talked to say I should get Double 00 buckshot. Brand doesn't really matter just for home defense. If your going to rig your shotgun I would get an extended mag and a flashlight attachment ( http://surefire.com/ http://midwayusa.com/ )
If you get a pistol get NOTHING under a .38 or a 9mm

I believe since the 2nd ammendment does give us the right to bear arms, then we should be able to keep guns in the home to protect the home. It is perfectly legal as long as you register your weapon and know how to use it. The first thing you should do is take a gun safety class and lesson on how to use a gun properly (and with good aim). Then you should probably buy a small discrete hand gun like a smith and wesson. Make sure it is semi-automatic so you can have more bullets in at one time. Practice with it at a shooting range to make sure you won't accidentally shoot nothing and get attacked in the process. And before you ever buy a gun make sure you are willing to harm another human being who tries to hurt your family by breaking into your home.

If you are going to protect your home only, a shotgun or rifle is best. A hand gun can be taken from you easily and you will also shake from adrenaline. A handgun is unstable at this point and you might miss the shot and be vulnerable to the crime then.

Actually it should be required by law .. just like those anti-shock UL Listed bathroom electric circuits!
Nothing beats a shotgun, and there is no better shotgun than the Striker-12... 12 shots of 12 gauge, with little recoil.
Which is probably why the government made them contraband during the Brady Bill deal

By law it is and that is a decision each household has to make for themselves. I would never have a gun in my house even though I was raised in a household where my parents had guns. My husband comes from a country where average citizens do not own handguns so he would never have one in his house.

I am beginning to think we will need as many as we can get. Look at this mess we are in. I would start with a hand gun first but you need to take a course on gun safety

Do you believe you could protect yourself and your home without one???
As others have stated here, a shotgun, preferably with a short barrel of no less than 18 inches is best. Also, a handgun can be stashed nearby and ready for immediate use.
