I am wondering, does the Lord God care about animals?

yes, they are one of the finest creations

I think He cares about animals for one reason because one of the prophecies of things to come includes the promise that everything that has breath will praise the Lord.
When our dog died last fall, I prayed a lot through his sickness and death, and God helped me through it, teaching me more of His love.
I don't know if our dog himself will be in heaven, but other animals are promised to be there. Another indication that the Lord God cares about animals.

Yes, He does - God cares about His creation! Take for example, when God wantted to destroy the world because of their sins, Noah was given the order by God to get all the types of animals, in sets of 2's. Clearly he had a purpose, and purpose comes with love. So yes.

well God created animals in the first place to keep Adam company that's until Eve was created.

And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every [sort] shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep [them] alive with thee; they shall be male and female. Gen. 6
why would God ask Noah to do this?
