This sounds crazy, but I taught high school English for a while and the "School House Rock" videos did an amazing job with the high school age students. They haven't really seen most of these but they enjoy them...and the catchy phrases really stick with them. I was amazed when I'd hear my students singing the grammar songs up and down the hallway---but hey--they knew their parts of speech! I know you asked for a book, but I got such great results with the videos, I thought you might want to consider them.

Try the Spectrum workbooks by McGrawHill. you can find them at any large bookstore . I often use them when I'm tutoring students. The Phonics may only go up to 6th grade but that's ok you will still be teaching the student the decoding skills they need to attack unknown words.
