Redondo Beach and Venice Beach are fun and fairly low-key, driving through the Hollywood Hills and down Rodeo Drive is kitchy, and touring Universal Studio give both a feel for the film industry and an action-packed amusement park experience, though it is quite pricey. Sometimes you can catch them recruiting for studio audiences for television series, talk shows, and game shows, (the area around Grumann's Chinese Theatre) and that's free and fun, too. You will have a great time-I'm jealous!

If you have to recommend someone who's visiting LA in the summer we have the beach, obviously.
Got a car? If so...
There's also Universal Studios, and you can even try being in the audience in a TV or Game show by checking "audiences unlimited".. If you are daring, try getting tickets for the Tonight Show or the Jimmy Kimmel show. You got to get there early but its fun and worth the time.
LA has the X-games in August at the staples center or catch a baseball game at Dodgers Stadium.
The Chinese Theater in Hollywood Blvd has the famous hand prints, and if you're in town for a movie premiere, check out the celebrities walking down the red carpet.
LA has historical places to visit and ethnic places like China town and Olvera (little Mexico) Street. You can also go and see the expensive shops on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills or the famous Farmer's Market near the CBS studios.
If you like Comedy you can check out one of the many comedy clubs on the Sunset Strip, check out the Hustler store, and if you are near the Flynt Publications building, sometimes you can see Larry Flynt's limo (you really can't miss the naked woman painted on the limo!).
If you wish to venture south to Orange County, there's Disneyland, Angels Stadium (Angels baseball), and you can visit the beach area like Huntington Beach, where many surf competition occur there. Plus, its the "OC" where you can see the real OC (well according to MTV) Laguna Beach.
Further south of the OC is San Diego, which is about 1 1/2 to 2 hrs south of LA. Then next to San Diego is Mexico, which you can cross the border and take a day trip in Tijuana.
There's some of the "must see" that I would suggest to someone visiting.

Universal Studios Citywalk....adjacent to Universal Studios. lots of restaurants, shopping, movie theater, etc. This could take several hours.
Hollywood and Highland...this is a mall......if you like to walk around and just explore, shop, eat, you might enjoy this. If you walk along Hollywood Blvd., you'll find the Chinese Theater, famous for cement hand and foot prints of famous stars, old and new. There's the El Capitan, movie house owned by Disney. The Disney Soda Shop takes you back to the 1950's ambiance. You could even fall in line to watch a Jimmy Kimmel Live taping. They're next to the El Capitan.
The beaches are also a good place to hangout. Santa Monica Pier, Newport, Venice, Balboa beaches are good ones.
Third Street and Promenade in Santa Monica. Open mall atmosphere.
Rodeo Drive and Robertsons Blvd. in Beverly Hills.
If you want to venture suburbs outside of LA, visit Old Town Pasadena. Colorado Blvd. offers so much diversity - antique shops, museums, lots of small cafes to sit and enjoy a relaxing summer day.
Good Luck and Enjoy your stay in So.Cal.

You should try downtown, coming from someone who's lived here which seem like forever the beaches are over-rated.
