Error Message: "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor." with Details such as: "IExplore caused an invalid page fault in module Mshtml.dll." or "IExplore has caused an error in Mshtml.dll. IExplore will now close. If you continue experiencing problems, try restarting your computer." (or something similar)

Translation: You may receive these types of error messages after installing IE. And by clicking the Details button in the error message window, you'll see the second part of the error message. During new program installations, many of the files copied to the system are DLL files. And, as we mentioned previously, DLL files that don't work with existing software or DLL files that have been deleted or become corrupt frequently cause illegal operation messages and then shut down the program.

Solution: This particular error message might be caused by a conflict with an earlier version of Gator software by Gator.com. Gator helps Internet users expedite the process of filling out forms online. To solve the problem, you can either uninstall Gator or upgrade to the latest version of the software. Did you load a newer version Windows on this old Compaq? It's possible there's a conflict between that and the motherboard memory going on, if that's the case.

If not, it very well could be either the old version Windows on the old Compaq computer badly needs updating from the Windows.com website.

If updates don't help, then we're closing on a possibility your old compaq computer may have a troublesome virus lurking on the hard drive. You'll find (and you really have to look for it) a FREE version of AVG anti-virus that (if you can) download and it should be of some help. I'd also load up on some spyware programs like Crap Cleaner as well.

It's likely you'll have to find these programs on another computer and download/burn them on a CD. Try that and see if it works.

There may be different reasons for this problem. If you have installed a new one and that is not working, then probabily your hardware does not support the software.

The second and most probable reason is that your explorer hanged during some operation and you "end tasked" it. or restarted the computer. Due to this some explorer files may be damaged. That needs the reinstallation of the software or repair it from the disk you installed the explorer.

It has probably corrupted from its age and the software installed on the computer. Follow the Repair instructions for Internet Explorer here:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q194177/

    Or for Windows XP:

    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378

Otherwise it probably has to do with Quicktime, Flash, Shockwave or any toolbars that you may have installed. Try reinstallion those and seeing if the problem persists.

This is usually the fix even if Explorer is Windows Explorer and not Internet Explorer as both are connected.

You may be running an older version of windows while trying to run computer-heavy programs.

I would suggest updating to the latest version of windows

    Windows XP Home edition SP2

And if you already are, there may be a virus on your computer and antivirus software, like the free Windows Defender, is necessary
