Why do new tires seem so slick?

The last few times I have bought tires, it seems as though I am driving on marbles for the first 100 miles. These are performance tires.

New tyres may have a mold release residue on them although I would hope that it would have worn off by now.

Have you checked the tyres aren't overinflated ... this can cause the same symptoms (also check that the wheel nuts have been torqued properly [especially alloys that need re-torqued after week or so]).

It's quite common to warn motorcycle riders to be careful while riding with new tires fitted to their bikes, untill the tires are 'scuffed in' or the surface of the tire is worn slightly to give better contact with the road.

I suppose the same effect could be seen on car tires, but the average driver probably wouldn't notice the difference.
