Why are the inside of some tunnels tiled?

There are at least 2 tunnels in Minnesota that have roads through them that have tiles on the walls and ceilings. Why are tiled

The tiles provide no structural support like in a bathroom they are pretty, easy to clean, and most immportantly protect the important structural components of the tunnel from exposure to the air, dirt and acid which are in abundance in a tunnel

Most likely it is just for decorative purposes.

The tiles would not add any structural support although they might be used as a very fancy version of a surface protectant (the standard is paint).
