If a teenage...?

If a teenage girl has a older car (11 yrs old) and will leave for college soon, should the parents buy the teenage girl a newer car for safety reasons?

She has good grades and is well balanced.

YES MOST DEFINATLEY...maybe not a brand spanking new car but yes a car that is dependable (no more that 5 years old)...i'm almost 21 and my parents refuse to buy me a new car because they are scared because my older brother screwed them before in money matters but i'm different (mom).

but anyways you DESERVE something reliable that you won't have to worry about...your parents should be proud to buy you a car...obviously you are responsible and maintain good grades...they should treat you to whatever you want...as long as you help make some payments!

No. A big part of going off to college is learning to handle life's responsibilities ... like your car breaking down and having to pay for the repairs. The safety of your vehicle is tested every year when you get it inspected. A newer car can be just as unsafe if the tires are not properly maintained, the windshield wipers are worn, or the brakes need work. The age of a car has nothing to do with the safety ... it's the upkeep that counts.

I know this is not the answer you want to hear, but your parents actually deserve the newer car as a reward for getting you this far in life.

Nope, I was in that same situation a few years ago (as the teenage girl) and my parents didn't even though I graduated in the top 10 people of my class. I had three jobs the summer before I went to college working almost 70 hrs. a week and worked part time my first year of college to buy myself a brand new car. Make her work harder to earn the new car.

It's not the age of the car that matters -- It's the shape the car's motor is in that matters.

Parent's get what they can afford--not what is the coolest. Appreciate the fact that you have a car because they are many whose parents cant buy them one. If you want a newer car get a job and pay for it.

Parents are never obligated to buy a car for their child. Why don't you get a job, save up your money and buy your own car? And by the way, most colleges I know of don't let freshmen bring cars on campus - as well as you get easily get through college without a car at all... it's called a bicycle and public transportation.

Sorry but you are out of luck. You don't have a right to a new vehicle just because you have good grades and are "well balanced".

Maybe your parents can't afford a new car, which may be why you are driving around an older one now.

Try saving up towards a new car yourself.

yeah, i think that the parents should by the first car. It should be a decision between the parents and child, the parents mainly, considering they have to pay for it. That way they can decide if the car's fuel-efficient, and all that good stuff...If the child isn't happy, they can get a job, save up and buy their own car!

I think the best thing would be to work and save up money and buy a car with the help of your parents. Or get a steady job, and make a deal with your parents, like they put the down payment and you pay monthly and ya'll split the insurance. (that's what I'm doing with my dad)

I am going to college and I have always had a job to pay for my vehicle I pay a 400.00 a month car note without my parents help. It sucks but I am better with my money because of it. And i got a ride that I love.

No, the parent have no obligation to do any such thing.

If the teenager is concerned for her safety and gets good grades and is well balanced she could purchase her own vehicle

    or bus ticket.
