Okay. Limewire is a P2P (peer to peer) file sharing system. Using this program you can download various music, video, other programs, etc. To download these programs they come from other files from other people. The more people that have the same file, the easier it is to download that file. Basically you type in what youre looking for. From there a list will come where you pick what looks best for you. The best downloads are normally the ones that have a larger number of downloads beside it. It pulls the information from other files to make yours. Thats how it works. On the factor of being legal, normally it's supposed to work like Napster or ITunes where you pay for each download. But for Limewire its free. To be honest I'm not quite sure where their support to keep it free comes from. Like I said before though the music files come from other files from other people. Their pooled information gathered together is what forms your download. Hope this works for you. Good luck.

The Limewire program loads into your PC and after you set certain "permissions", it will search your hard drive(s) for .mp3 or .wav filetypes. It will catalog those titles on a server with a link to your PC. When someone searches through Limewire, they are looking at the catalog of titles that Limewire has accumulated from all the people who have downloaded the program and given permission for the server to "read" the filenames of the music everybody has. If you see that there are 20 copies of the same song, that means the Limewire server has current access to 20 PC's currently with that title/filename. The legality is a murky issue, depending on where you are. In some countries, it's not legal, in some countries, no one cares. The internet isn't called the "World Wide Web" for nothing. The music comes from all the PC's that are connected. I'm a part time DJ and have 465 gig of .mp3's on 4 hard drives, but I use KaZaa or 360SharePro. about 48,500 tunes. What are you looking for? There is a website called http://www.yousendit.com/ which allows you to transfer files as large as 1 gigabyte (but for that much, it's real slow, better to zip 100 meg filesizes at a time) directly from one person to another.

It is legal. Because it is a file sharing program whcih means people submit the music they have, but beware sometimes they name it wrong. Anymore questions go to their site.
