Automatic Transmissions and Shifting?
I heard it all from no you should not and it really does not matter if you shift gears on an automatic transmission car, ive cheked my manual and it recomends shifting gears when your heavy and goin up hills. but thats about it it does not specify about normal driving and shifting, now I do it practically every single time I drive my car and the only thing i notice is that it eats up my gas faster but thats it, how harmfull it is really if you shift and down shift good... never redlining the RPMS, i acknowledge my trans. is not in excellent working condition but thats do to playing around and trying to peel-out-I know thats a no-no but its still fun.

Well, since no one else wants to give you a reason for the answer, here I go. An automatic transmission uses whats known as "planetary gear set". There is a good explaination of how it works in the "Sources" section below. Essentially, if you manually shift the gears in your automatic transmission, you're forcing the tranny to run outside of the revs that it wants to run for each gear. You may not be thinking that you are causing any damage... and in fact you're not causing damage to the transmission simply by manually shifting it... the damage comes in running the gears outside of their engineered speeds. It is hard on the engine, and on the tranny (not to mention the tanny fluid).
So, enjoy the link below. It is a great site if you want to learn how things work.

Spike, I hope you grow up soon and treat your car better. Do you have any idea how much it costs to rebuild or replace an automatic transmission? More that your car is worth, I bet.
