I'm confused about something dealing in Christianity.?

If the basic beliefs of Chrstianity are love, respect, understand, charity, and forgiveness, than how are so many so biggoted and ignorant towards other cultures and religions?

Update:

I'm not saying that there aren't bigots everywhere. I'm jsut asking how so many Christians can be so high and mighty about the love that Jesus taught without displaying those ever-important values themselves?

Update 2:

Thanks to everyone, you've all given me a little more insight into understanding things of this nature.

That is a good Question...let me say this, no matter what area in human living, spiritual culture, science and others,

there is going to be negatives in these. Good and bad in other words. Humans basicaly want the best for them selves, humans were born selfish and inherited sin from there fore fathers going back to Adam.

Keep in mind there are a lot of people no matter what they believe in try hard to do right...keep serching my dear, in all areas in life try to do the positive things.

I am very proud to call myself a Christian. I do not understand why people who call themselves "christians" are so biggoted and ignorant towards others, like you said. I love to talk to people of other religions and compare our beliefs. How other religions differ from my own is very interesting to me. I mean, I whole heartedly believe in the Bible, God's promises and in Jesus Christ's sacrifice on our behalf . But I can also respect and admire others' beliefs in their religions . I am happy when I find others who are looking to find the answers to questions they have about GOd and I can share the truths I have found in the Bible with them. I don't want to convert people or force my religion down their throats. I'll share if you ask, but I certainly don't look down on you if you don't believe the same way that I do. I think that far toooo many religions teach intolerance and judgemental attitudes.

Now the Bible DOES say that you are to keep the congregation clean.... so if you are having someone in the congregation that is practicing sin that is disruptive and unclean to the congregation... you must weed that person out so as not to allow corruption to tarnish the congregation. But that is different from initially contacting someone who isn't nessecarily someone that is the 'same' as eveyone in the congregation. People are different and there has got to be charity and forgiveness and understanding -- Christ himself taught this. But the weeding out that I mentioned? That is only for the un-repentant and repettitive sinner, the one that refuses to quit the course of sin that is not a way of christian life . ( i.e.--- drunkeness.... fornication, adultury, ....)

Man,.... I have a headache. I hope I answered that clearly.

It's how other religions and cultures come across towards Christianity like ur self for instance saying that many are "Bigoted and Ignorant." Some Christians do understand but don't have to acknowledge them especially when others don't believe as Christians do but we do respect them. Name calling want get u any where. Say YES to morals! Be nice in ur questioning. Not offended.

Read Julie's answer and then you'll understand. Fundamentalist Christians are impossibly arrogant, and think that they alone know 'the truth' and everyone else is 'wrong'. Look at what she says: 'Other religions don't like hearing the truth about the fact that they're 'wrong'.' Julie doesn't stop to imagine that the rest of the religions think that HERS is wrong, and that they have as much credibility in their religious beliefs as she does in hers. She's been told that Christians are right, and everyone else is wrong.

It's this arrogance and ignorance that makes Christians seem hateful and bigoted.

I am christian and was raised in a christian home. And for along time in my young adult life I started looking in other places for the same reason you are asking this question. I saw people that were preachers and Sunday school teachers doing things that they should not have been doing. And they were prejudice and cheated on there wife's and husbands and so on. So I , after i got married and moved out of my parents home, I looked into witch craft and everything that went with it, and I drank, I smoked pot , I cheated on my husband and other disgusting things . But all the while in the back of my mind God was still there ,he let me do what i wanted because there was nothing he could do because i was listening to the devil and i listened well, but i wasn't happy doing all this . One day I tried to kill myself, but even that didn't stop the devil in me or scare me enough to seek God again. Them almost 4 years ago, I was still a unhappy backslider ,so unhappy in fact that i put my pistol under my bed with intents of killing myself when my husband went to work. I had the pistol to my head in my bedroom and the tv was on and Joyce Meyers( she's a preacher) came on and every word she said was for me, and the devil almost had me seconds away from killing myself.I redecicated my life to God and I've never gone back and I never will.I was really young when i first got saved, and thats hard to do when you are young you are so weak and unless you can get someone to really mentor you and be there when you are at a weak spot most likely you will go back to where you came from. Sunday morning is not enought to keep you faithful to the Lord all week , there's to much temptation.and being a good christian does't mean you want have temptation ,that when you have them the most, i fight the devil every day and so does all christians , and if there are not strong enough they will be the things you ask about. Please dont judge us all by a few bad ones, i did and i almost killed myself ,just look around there are good one, and remember we are all still human after all. God Bless YOU

I have never look down on a muslim or any other believer in another religion. I just don't like what they believe, I look down on that. But Christians are made pure through Christ who is perfect, but if we didn't believe in Him we would still be sinful dying people like them. And it was not by ourselves that we believed it was through His grace(1) which is offered to all, not just a choicen few. Though few except this and think the other way around. We were never made perfect by our good works, or any works either.

But I understand what you mean. Some Christians hate others for their. They think that they are so much better then them and forgetting from where they have came and that it was God's grace who lifted us, not ourselves. That we were once them and fall back because we filled ourselves with pride and lift ourselves up in our own eyes. It is something we all do and I adment I've done it too but through Christ I have been forgiven, and those other people from other reeligions can find forgiveness in Christ too.

Source(s): (1)Ephesians 2:8-9: 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.
  • There is only one group of Christians who practice the TRUE religion and that's the one taught by Jesus himself. He told us to shun all others. If you read your Bible you will see this. He also told us what the signs would be as we approach the end of this system. Check Mathew for these signs. Anyone who follows his teaching to the letter is known as Jehovah's Witnesses, yes i know what your thinking, but Jesus himself said that his people would be hated and they are, so common sense must tell you that these people are of the TRUE religion. They are the kindest people on this earth, they help those in need, they don't judge others and they don't divorce and they don't commit adultery. They are not perfect and they do sometimes fall short of what is required of them but i would give my life for any of them. There isn't one religion who can truly say they are Christians except these people. You are right in what you say, which proves my point but the Witnesses are the only religion who do NOT do this,

When sticking up for what is right and promoting the truth, Christians and Christianity will often be attacked and called bigots and hate mongers. People, such as homosexuals, don't like to be reminded what they are doing is wrong and goes against nature and God. Different religions are the same way. They don't like hearing the truth and being told they are wrong

How big is your family? Does everyone in your family practice the same way or think the same way?

It is not the religion that's faulty, it's the people.

You must understand too that man's thinking has helped in the writing and interpretation of the Bible.

One question for you to ponder; why is the Bible called the word of God Read it and see how much is actually said by God.

theres nothing to be confused about. christian love is hypocracy in action. they are mean nasty people that dont practice what they preach. its a classic case of do as I say not as I do.

Jesus said do not think ive come for peace ive come with a sword, does that sound like peace? lets face it Jesus was not PERFECT as the christians have pimped him out to be.

heres are some passages that christians ignore all the time

Jesus is criticized by the Pharisees for not washing his hands before eating. He defends himself by attacking them for not killing disobedient children according to the commandment: "He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death." (See Ex.21:15, Lev.20:9, Dt.21:18-21) So, does Jesus think that children who curse their parents should be killed? It sure sounds like it. 15:4-7

    # Abandon your wife and children for Jesus and he'll give you a big reward. 19:29

If christians were really promoting Truth as they so claim they whouldnt act all high and mighty to other christians and non christians. christians dont even get along with other christians. they refuse to do so because they are too busy saying my Jesus is better than yours.

its christians that cast the first stone to minorities. know thier fruits, they are rotten.

We are not all like that. Some of us actually do try to practice what we believe. I myself do not steroetype other groups and cultures but have a deep respect for the religious beliefs of others.

I wish others would try to "walk the walk." I have kissed religion good-bye and no longer attend "church" . I have found my spiritual beliefs growing stronger.

Many, BUT NOT ALL, in attendance at church today only giving lipservice. Putting their halos on sun am and sun pm and taking them off as soon as they leave the building. It's not for me anymore. I choose to live by example. Do unto others and you want done unto yourself.

    Hope that helps.
