My Download Manager is not working properly in Firefox. A little help?

I use Firefox as my browser. I have downloaded and installed the latest version. When I save a pic to my hard drive, it takes about 5 seconds whereas it used to seem instant. I have cable broadband access, so I know that's not the issue. When I go to options->clear download manager history, the program freezes up and won't respond. I have a lot of downloads in that cache, and think that may be part of the program, but I can't delete them. Any ideas what the problem might be and how I can fix it?

Some of your files may have gotten corrupted. The best thing that you can do is to uninstall the download manager. Then download the program again and install it fresh.

Then after that, reinstall it lower back. It takes position to me previously and that's what I did. wish this allows.
