Don't you hate it when you're minding your own?
business and someone says, "smile, it can't be that bad." Sometimes I like to just think without interruption from strangers trying to be "cheery." Do I have to smile all the time?

i get that all the time. Its like if your not smiling people think something is wrong, or your a b****. What is up with that? I think people should mind their own business.

You absolutely do NOT have to smile all the time and for people to expect such a thing is ludicrous. Find some real, true friends to sympathize with because true friends will cry with you and console you in your darkest times while strangers or careless friends will simply brush you off with a "chin up girl" and a fake smile.

I love the reply to 'it takes less muscles to smile than frown' - "well it takes an extra four muscles to extend my arm and punch you but it'll be worth the effort" I get that all the time too, even if I'm happy my face looks miserable due to a family trait of my mouth curving down the way. To those people I usually lower my gaze and give them a maniacal grin and say "That better?"

Although is a good option, is not the best! You should not smile!!! Imagine how to smile when you feel like hell, and someone "cheery" tells you: "you should see a psychologist". Smile to that phrase!

That really cheeses me off! How would THEY know how bad it is or isn't? No, not only do you not have to smile all the time, you don't have to give anyone any bloody explanations or make excuses. It they REALLY get under your skin, tell them to sod off.

I know. It drives me nuts too. I once told some one who said that to me that I couldn't smile, I was going to die, and walked away. And it was the complete truth. We all will eventually die, right?

No, I just take it as the well meaning remark it is. When I am really feeling down, I stay by myself.

Yes, it is annoying. I think all the little silly comments people think they can make are annoying. I wish snap judgments could be outlawed. ;-)
