What does this mean: Alert! OS install mode enabled. Amount of memory limited to 256MB.?

I am trying to upgrade my memory modules, and it appears that the computer is not recognizing them.

    Go into the bios usually F2, and look for a setting called OS install mode it is probably set to on or enabled change setting to off or disabled and now your system will see all the memory.
