I have the same problem. Try an over the counter decongestant, it worked for me.

The pressure in your ears is not equal to the air pressure outside. Try closing your mouth and pinching your nose and then try to blow air out through your nose. This always works for me. You might also want to buy a product called "Ear Planes", which are available at drug stores or on-line travel stores, like magellans.com.

first of all, avoid travelling when you have a cold.
Try one of the two:
1. Open and close your mouth wide ( like a yawn)
2. close your nostrills and lips and exhale..it will redirect out through your ears. I found it pretty helpful.
Good luck on your next trip.

Gum never helped me, but odly enough yawning or twitching my ears seamed to relive to pressure pain.

i try to sleep during take off and landing, but i guess this is not always easy to do. what i do is, and it is always effective, i pinch my nose and try to exhale through my nose. the effect is that the air feels trapped (since i pinched my nose) and kind of feels like it's trying to go out of my ears, and this relieves the pressure! Try it! i guarantee it works!
