1800 isn't stronger than the regular stuff. Just smoother. If you are looking for inexpensive, Cuervo or Sauza is good. Patron is my favorite but it is more expensive.

There is a difference in taste between a gold and a silver. Gold makes a good margarita but silver isn't bad either. You can definitely taste the difference between a Patron margarita and a Cuervo or (heaven forbid!) shelf margarita.

If you are clueless to makeing margaritas and want to make it easy, try Cuervo's Golden Margarita Mix. It's tasty, not too sweet, and you can taste the tequila. It's all mixed in already so all you have to do is pour and enjoy! (Or blend if you want to)

The short answer is -- in margarita mix, they aren't going to taste a difference anyhow, so go with something mid-price unless you want snob appeal.

When you are making mixed drinks with a strong tasting mixer like cola, orange juice, or margarita mix, very few people can taste the difference between the most expensive liquors and something in a medium price range. I have tested this on people who drink Jack & Coke, Absolute screwdrivers, and so on ... only been called on it once. If you want snob appeal, put the cheaper stuff into the 'top shelf' bottles. Use the money you save to serve REALLY good liquor when you are serving it straight.

It depends on what type of margarita. If you're doing a flavored margarita (strawberry, mango), the fruit flavoring is strong enough that you can get away with a cheaper tequila. However, if you're using limes, sweet &sour, triple sec, and tequila for your margarita...do it right get some Patron Silver.

Unless you want to get them all drunk, do not use cuervo 1800! It is stronger than the usual stuff. Forget the margaritas, make square cows. Malibu rum, pineapple juice, splash of cranberry juice. They are delicious!

If you have a fetish for dirt cheap tequilla, try Pepe Lopez...man just thinking about it makes me gag.

    Seriously, Cuervo.

sauza hornitos makes a sweeter margarita. and dont use a mix.....blech!! get a good metal shaker with a strainer, fill with ice and add 2oz. tequila, 1 oz. tripple sec ( or if you want to be fancy you can use grand mariner ) and sweetened lime luice. shake that sucker till it gets so cold it hurts your hand, rub the glass rim with fresh lime and dip in kosher salt, strain into glass and ole'!!

Any tequilla is fine. Clear colored ones would be better for mixing drinks though.

    HAVE FUN!!!
