One law for the rich and another for the poor? Is this right?

I'm against anyone breaking the law or drug taking but it seems that if you're a rich, famous celebrity you can get away with much more than Joe Public.

Take the much beloved Kate Moss. She is discovered and filmed taking drugs, arrested and investigated by the police and let off with a caution. Yet, Kate Moss continues to be adored by the public and earns millions advertising products.

With great wealth, celebrity and fame should come great responsibility as these people are icons of younger and more impressionable people who copy their behaviour even if it's criminal.

Why aren't (popular) celebrities punished under the law and made to suffer for their wrong doings like ordinary people? Is this right? I'd like the views of others on this as I can't be the only one who feels this is wrong. Serious discussions only please as any abuse of yahoo answers will be reported.

Update:

Thanks for all the answers - including the reverse argument which was very well put, especially as it answered the question as well as discussing the example. As I feel all answers contain very valid points, I'm putting this to public vote. Thanks again for all those who replied. Vox populus will decide.

Money is power and power rules the world. Look at the members of congress. There are a multitude of laws that help make and keep them rich. If we ran a business and ran it the exact same way....We would go to Jail. We need to vote everyone out of office and change the playing field. It would be nice it it were a bit more level.

So far you have received 27 answers that say almost the same thing. If there is one thing I know it is that there is ALWAYS an argument for the other side. Here it is. You and I don't have camera toting papparazzi breathing down our necks everywhere we go, nor does every slip of our tongue or foot that is recorded make its way to the media and via the media the police. Kate Moss might need some help, granted, but consider that the police would never have even seen a video of her allegedly using cocaine if it weren't for her celebrity status - the fact that she is a celebrity actually exposed her to MORE potential liability under the law, not less (not to mention she lost millions in endorsement contracts after the incident - I doubt you or I would lose millions of dollars for the same act). The fact that the police didn't charge her is understandable since the only evidence was a videotape of her doing something that resembled the use of an illegal drug. I doubt you would be charged for "use" under the same circumstances. You general question(s) asks if it is "right" that wealth affords better legal services. That's a tough question, but in a democratic, capitalist society, it's inevitable. Wealth affords some people better cars, better houses, better interest rates and better investment options. Is this "wrong"? I think the avaiability of better service for better pay is one of the factors that encourages us to go out and work hard to be successful. And that isn't necessarily wrong.

Money is not power, "power" is a very mis-construed word and has nothing to do with domination manipulation or control , it has to do with things happening naturally, evidence of this is Band Aid, Perestroika, Ghandi, Martin Luther King and Elvis Presely and the Beatles even.

The world is run by "an idea" not a president, king or government and when an idea that is more effective "an ideas time thats come" comes about and a natural transition occurs that can't be stopped by no matter how much money tries.

So don't forget the power of the pen, and learn how to sow seeds and nurture them into germination.

  • I too think it's wrong that celebrities seem to have a different set of rules to the rest of us. Theres so much emphasis today on following law to the letter and so many irrelevant little rules that most people dont even realise are there. But then celebrities seem to bypass all this and seem to get away with all except murder. However, on the other side of this argument celebrities are 'pubished' (although admittedly to a lesser extent) by being publicly shamed as their career relies on image in most cases.

Thats the way it is,you can get away with virtually anything in Britain providing you have the money for a top lawyer.many years ago there was a case involving a top politician,he was seen to be driving his car in an erratic state. The police chased him at high speed ,near his home he drove over a roundabout, the chase fin.ished in the driveway outside his house. As soon as the car stopped,he got out and changed places with his secratary,She swore that she had been driving, the end of this story is,that in court the two policemen were proved ,by his top defence(expensive) lawyer to be liars and that his secratary had been driving.out side the court he made a statement along the linesthat"money talks". This is the same of todays"personalities" if they have enough money they can buy their way out of trouble

Could you imagine Kate Moss at HMP Holloway?! There wasn't enough evidence to prosecute her because they could not be sure that the powder she was snorting was cocaine. All they had was that video footage and no expert evidence confirming that it was a Class A drug like you normally get in criminal proceedings.

You're right though, they are treated differently but I suppose that's the society we live in. Money and fame talks.

I agree, the fact that they can pay for better legal services, is part of the problem, their lowers can manipulate just about anyone. And [most] really good lawyers will only take cases for the underprivileged if they think there will be alot of media coverage, so they become famous and make even more money !!! The laws maybe equal, but representation is not !!!

It's wrong but that's just the way it is. I always thought it was unfair that the JonBenet Ramsey case got so much attention when there are probably many other cases just like hers, except the child in question is much poorer and has been in less beauty pageants. But the thing is, there's no use complaining unless you're gonna do something to fix it.

Law is a crap shoot, it has somewhat but not totally rich and poor issues. Criminal law is based mostly on laws and case history. In that case rich and poor issues comes in on the experience of the attorney and yes money but not always. Most people hear of the celebrity cases, like OJ's. in that case it was also the jury.

Most people don't hear much of the contract laws that the same people get involved with and loss.

Until we change our system of law and make lawyers civil servants and not profiteers and we revamp our jury system it will be a crap shoot. And that my friend is a fact.

No it is not alright. It has been like this for many years, looks like the system is not gonna change. Money is power, politics and who you know. Since money talks, walks and plays the games it will remain. It's been a kiss
