The statement is quite correct. However, the later stateement attributed to interstate stayers that this does not obtain in other states is only partially true.Maharashtra in Western India is also reputed for similar safe passage for women at night . Even if some young girl were to pass by a hutment colony at night, the worst that will happen is they may whistle oor pass lewd remarks but never molest her and may in fact gave her safe passage. This is thands to a very lively women's liberation movement in this state during the late 19th, early 20th century. The position is Southern states of India is also more or less satisfactory inthis regard. However,in the Northern ones it is not so secure. This is because of a lack of any noticeable movement of social liberation movements in these states in the past. Again in the East , the situation is West Bengal, Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram,Arunachal Pradesh Meghalay,Tripura etc. the position is satisfactory. On account of cross-currents of migration of people on an account of industrial activities this situation is somewhat disturbed. However, the local culture which disapproves of such looseness reasserts itself after some time.
