Can animals be right-handed/left-handed? Or are most just ambidextrous?

Most vertebrates tend to be dominant on one side or the other, continually leading with one side. That doesn't mean they can't use their other side, or don't; it's a lot easier to use both hands when you're not doing the kind of fine motor work humans do. But specializing with one side makes it easier to perform the same task than having to master it with both sides.

    See attached, for example.

I think it would depend on the animal. Since Chimpanzees are the closest in development to humans, I would guess that they can be either left or right handed. The remaining animals, if you're referring to ALL animals, (you should be more specific next time); including the four-legged ones, which in this case do not have "hands", then NO. The term "ambidexterous" only refers to a "human" being able to use both hands equally well, not animals.

And, may I say this, since the left & right sides of the body are controlled by the opposite sides of the brain, then us "lefties" are the only ones in their right mind. Thank You! (I just had to get that out there for us "Lefties"!!!

I think most are ambidextrous. But I know that polar bears are left handed.

Just like humans, all animals have a favoured side when using their limbs, so not all of them are ambidextrous.

I know that horses also come left or right footed. Probably most animals are born with one propensity or the other in similar percentages as humans. I don't know why animals would be different--Humans ARE animals!

Flight animals are conditioned to one side or the other. Prey animals tend to prefer one side to the other. Observe a cat toying with a mouse. One paw is the primary. It is an obsevation over time.
