What kind of food should i give my cichlids and when can i give them live foods?

Give it cichlid attack at first till they get big enough then when the live foods are small enough to fit in their mouths give them live foods. I would start with live ghost shrimp.

All of you are telling him what to feed his cichlids without even knowing what species of cichlid he owns. Cichlid's diets vary by species. Some Cichlids are carnivorous and need high protien foods such as beefheart, bloodworms, brine shrimp, etc. Others are Omnivorous, meaning they need a variety of foods including both meat and vegetation. And then there are other species that are strictly herbivores. Malawii's are stricktly herbivorous and feeding them any high protein foods can lead to Malawii Bloat. As for live foods, it's good to stay away from feeder fish like guppies and goldfish. These can spread all kinds of disease to your fish and don't have the nutrients your fish may need. Live foods aren't a neccesity and can sometimes be a pain. More convenient and healthier, safer foods are available frozen at most fish stores. Most importantly, make sure you know what species you have and what their nutritional and environmental needs are so that you know you are properly feeding and caring for them.

Most commercial foods are fine... some sink, some float... pellets come in different sizes also... small, medium large...

Depends if your cichlid is a bottom or top feeder and the size of the cichlid...

As far a live food, most petstores also have this available in a small refrigerator... If you are new to this, I recommend commercial bought before trying to "catch" or "grow" your own...

I do not reccommend live foods often. They just aren't good for them. I give my oscar a live fish maybe every two weeks as a treat - but not as a main diet.

I also do not reccommend feeding them the goldfish feeders. These guys are dirty and inbred and just prob the worse fish to feed to your cichlids. Buy feeder guppies - basically when they are big enough to fit the fish in their mouths. I would give my Oscar baby mollies when he was little.

Just give them a cichlid pellet diet and frozen bloodworms as a treat. They love bloodworms and these are actually healthy for them.

How about cichlid food, and it would probably be good to wait until they are big before giving them live food.

mopar_murph has the idea. They will eat most food we do. IF, they not like it, they will spit it out. Also it was mentioned when they big enough to get live food in their mouth and start with Ghost Shrimp. I just fed my Tiger Oscars some Pork Meat from a Roast we cooked today, they love it. Don't forget their veggies too.

Live ffods aren't needed, frozen does just fine. But if you want to feed live as a treat, try

Feeder shrimp

Mysis shrimp

Crickets

Mealworms

And suchlike. Obviously adjust to how big the fish are.
