Why did people drink out of a shoe?

I saw an old 80's movie today, and somebody was drinking alcohol out of a shoe. Why did they do this? Is it supposed to make you more drunk? Or was it just the cool thing to do? Sorry if this is just a stupid question, but I really would like to know. Thanks!
