Torn ACL, what to do?
My 13 year old lab may have a torn ACL.
We are going to Guelph to have tests run and x-rays.
In the mean time, what can I do to make the dog more comfortable? I have already been told that if it is infact torn, then he will not be able to have surgery because of his age.
Any idea's for making him feel as good as he can?

Your dog is definitely too old to benefit from any surgery. My vet put my dog on Rimadyl for the pain and inflammation. You can get (or make) a sling to help the dog walk and take the weight off injured leg...

Just give him lots of love and attention. Also, put a note on the front door telling people to call before they knock or ring the bell - that way he won't try to go charging to the door and hurt himself!

Talk to your vet about any anti-inflammatory medications that you may safely give your dog. Also, if you can help him get around by using a sling, such as a towel, under his belly to support his hind end when he walks. And don't forget, lots of love. The condition, while it is somewhat painful in the beginning, seems to be more of a weakness problem, and dogs tend to adjust pretty well. Good luck, and I hope he gets better soon!

I would make sure that the dog is being cared for just by rubbing and petting it. I would also try to get ice to put on that area as well. I'm not sure if it would work to massage the dog occasionally. For a fact I know that you might want to baby the dog as much as possible and make it easy for the dog to get around.

Better than asking this question here, why don't you join the Yahoo group called OrthoDogs (or something like that). Has your vet given you no suggestions? Is there an Orthopedic Specialist in your area who can advise you?
