Question for Muslims re Ancient History.?

I heard a comment from an archeologist regarding the Muslim world's perception of ancient artifacts and I'd like to know if it's true, as well as your personal views - These are not my own views and measured responses would be welcome.

'Anything that came before the prophet is irrelevant. Anything that does not adhere to the teachings of God should be destroyed. Therefore the Muslim world considers the heritage of their respective countries, before the prophet, irrelevant and sees no reason to protect them.'

I've never heard anything that would indicate a belief that anything from before the time of Prophet Muhammad (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) is "irrelevant". Yes, prior religious teachings are superseded by the Qur'an. But cultural artifacts? No.

Regarding destroying things that don't adhere to the teachings of Islam...hmmm...yes, I guess you could say that it true. For example, ancient idols would definitely not be protected because idolatry is obviously the antithesis of Islamic monotheism and Muslims have been ordered to destoy idols. But of course we don't go around destroying others' property or going to foreign countries in search of artifacts that are against our religious teachings so that we might destroy them.

If you refer to what the Taliban did to the ancient statues in Afghanistan, keep in mind that they were the legitimate government at that time and it was within their authority to do what they wished. They weren't going to India and blowing up the many idols there, but acting upon something in their own country over which they held legitimate authority. Many people were appalled at this action and felt the statues belonged to the world, but that would be like saying Mt Rushmore belongs to the world when it's clearly US property over which the US government holds jurisdiction and authority. It's astonishing that so many people felt so strongly about saving those statues, while so few spoke up about humans dying in Afghanistan. If people were so willing to pay money to save the statues, why wouldn't they pay to save homeless, hungry Afghani children?

There's no reason to destroy other artifacts Muslims might have or find from other cultures, such as pottery, tools, etc., even if those other cultures were non-Muslim. But then if limited funds are available, we wouldn't spend millions to preserve such items while children are going without food. Muslims would find choosing to pay to save metal and wood instead of paying to save people to be ridiculous and abhorrent.

    This is total rubbish.

Islam respects culture and ancient heritage and does not seek to destroy anything except injustice.

In the Islamic world you see that such monuments etc have been protected and no-one saught to destroy them, for example the pyramids in Egpyt, ancient Persian heritage, etc.

Even the buddhist shrines in Afghanistan were never touched by the various muslim rulers over hundreds of years - until very recently with a regime that maybe does not understand Islam in the way it was originally meant.

In addition, the Quran talks very much about ancient history - the history of Islam starts with Adam, not Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon them, and goes through the Prophets Noah, Abraham, Joseph, Moses , Jesus and others.

I cannot think where you got this quote from.

www.islamonline.net has more info on this including fatawa from respected mainstram scholars.

I think the Taliban put this into practice when it destroyed some ancient statues of Budha before they got their arses kicked out of power. Too bad for the statues, but all religion is crap so I'm not worried about the religious offense it caused.

Hinduism isn't 5000 years old. This fantasy has been unfold by ability of christians because of the fact they think of earth is 6000 years old, so certainly for them something previous 6000 years isn't proper, as this is going to cave in all their perception. Hinduism is fairly very historical and while Europe became decrease than the conver of thick ice and american tribes have been studying to make hearth, Hindu Rishis have been busy to find the mysteries of concepts and universe. I completely consider you that invaders and pseudo seculars have replaced the background and the parable of Aryan Invasion, Caste device, sati and glorifying the invaders have been their important weapons against the greatness of hinduism and that i'm sorry to assert they succeded in growing to be this confusion interior the concepts of hindus and maximum of them nonetheless think of on those lines

in Islam it holds mother land at a very high rank and along with it comes its heritage but if it interferes with the right path ( as they say for i am an atheist but was born in a Muslim family) it must go and Islam also dictates that if something is good no matter when its from one should cherish it.
