Can we replace CMOS battery of a motherboard?

A message prompt whenever I start my PC, Motherboard is about 3 years old model MSI KT7N2 Delta. CMOS date is error and CMOS battery failed. Can I just send it over to the computer store and have the CMOS battery replaced?

Update:

If the CMOS battery failed then, when replaced, which memory would be lost? Otherwise if caused by virus, how do we run test to check on BIOS as well?

The purpose of the cmos battery is to store date and time while the computer is switched off.

When this battery fails, your computer is unable to retain the date and time as well as the changes you made in your cmos setup.

Usually its a coin shaped battery, CR2032, 3volts. You can easily replace it yourself.

Yes, in fact you could replace it yourself if you are careful, it's about the size of a large button.

Additional Data- No information is lost when battery is replaced but clock will need resetting to current time.

Yes , its not a complicated job. Just you have to check out whether it properly sit in the slot after you replaced it and you need not have to worry abt lose your memory from hardwdisk. or if you don't want to change it use F1 to continue.

You could, but i'd be more inclined to have a look to see if there are any viruses on your PC first. Generally, these batteries don't fail

Yes - you could even replace it yourself. It may however erase its memory.

If you do do it yourself, make sure you discharge static from your hand first - ground it by touching the metalling casing of the base unit.
