You don't have to worry at all about the input because the output from the DVD player is pre-amp. Just think about how much you want to get. If you live in an apartment with people below, a sub is not a good idea. For a normal house with a normal sized living room, 1000W is good but a lot. It lets you turn it up when you want to. They integrate rather well, hardest part is always running those pesky wires

Most speaker systems are compatible with most DVD players and modern AV receivers. There is no one "best" because the sound of speakers is a personal choice, and even the experts can't agree on a "best". Still, some brands (like Onkyo, Denon, and KEF) get consistently good reviews. Check out one of those systems at a better hifi shop (Tweeter, Best Buy with Magnolia, etc.) Boston Acoustics are also great.
Avoid Cambridge Soundworks (pure hype, crappy speakers).

dvd player cant drive your speakers you need an amplifier specifically a Home Theater amplfier then you need the speakers the rule of the thumb in choosing the right amp & speakers is that see how big is your room, amp wattage should approximately the same as you total speakers wattage.
