work etiquette?

I work at a company and one fellow employee impeticular doesn't wear deodorant. His body odor is very offensive and complaints have been made to his supervisor about him. The supervisor however, will not do anything about this. What can we do.

Please note: he is a car technician and works out in a shop (which is not air conditioned) and is quite sweaty. It's really quite disgusting!

This is a very delicate situation with many people...

If you are a "friend", you might want to take him aside and as tactfully as possible inform him that people are complaining about his body odor...

I had this same situation some years ago with a person under my supervision, she was quite offensive as well... I brought her outside one afternoon and gently told her about the complaints from some of the other employees... She didn't show up to work for two days afterward, but when she did return...

She came back with a new haircut, new clothes, and a clean fresh scent...

    Good luck...

First, give the guy a little slack. He works outside and most likely works hard. If he's outside, this is a non-issue and you should try to be more tolerant. However, if he spends longer than an hour inside (aside from lunch), then perhaps purchasing one of the more generic brands and discreetly giving it to him would be less offensive to him. I worked in an office (no excuse for poor hygiene here), and there was a young man who was not terribly aware of his body odor. I went and got him a Speedstick, handed it to him and that was that. Whether he decided to use it is another matter, but at least he knew a few important things:

    He smelled

There were people offended by it

There was one person who didn't publicly embarrass him

    The issue was not pressed.

I know a person who has a similar problem at work. This guy works in a stamping plant and a woman co worker is a bit over weight and refuses to wear deodorant. They got together and said something to the plant super about it. He had a talk with the woman, she went the following day and got a doctor to write a note saying she was allergic to certain chemicals in deodorants and cant wear it..

Needless to say, they just have to deal with her smelly, disgusting self..

( I saw this person once when I was invited out to a company picnic, this offensive female was there.nasty as could ever be and in a swimsuit..unshaven and horrible..)

What does he smell like when he first arrives? If he smells bad right off the bat, surely there is a way of getting him to start the day off fresh...lol

But if he comes in smelling good already, then why bother someone who is sweating and can't help it??? I also work in hot conditions, drive a vehicle that is hot with no a/c, and there's nothing I can do about it but suffer, but still try to do the best job that I can. The only other advice I can give is just to give the guy some space.

That is such a senstive topic. Ask yourself how you would want to be told if roles were reversed. Your supervisor should be handling it and it shouldn't be up to you or your co-workers to have to say something to him. However, if you must take matters into your own hands, you could say something like, "I don't want to hurt your feelings, however, some of the other employees are complaining about a smell that is supposedly coming from your work area." That could at least be a start. Tough topic, that's for sure!

He more than likely bathes and uses deoderant every day. Some unfortunate people have extreme body oder and working outside in a hot garage doing grunt work isn't going to make it better. He probably cant help it. I'll bet he is more aware of it that you all are.

he have to be a good technician to not say hey man wash up a little .but you could have a shower put in one of the restroom on the job so these guy could wash up every now and again .other than that he is out in the heat working hard .leave the man alone

All the workers should have a meeting with the supervisor -- it's up to him/her to deal with it. The supervisor seems to be taking the easy way out by not addressing it.

Honestly if the supervisor has already been notified then I would be "rude" about it. I would buy some deodorant and just hand it to him and say..."you smell bro"

Just do this quietly and anonymous... Give him a gift bag with deodorant and other sweet smelling amenities... he will get the gist... Make sure he'll get it in person and without any fanfare.. The man shouldn't be embarrassed enough...
