Why is Gmail still invite-only?

Does anyone know why Google has decided to keep Gmail an invite-only service? Its been a long time since it was first available.

it is still invite-only , because it cost lots of money to big corporates to update an existing site or program. Google is adding new features still under the Beta version without being criticized for not having a fully functional mail server.

the other reason which is the biggest reason for keeping it still in invite-only stage is, that they want the growth of the email service to be controlled and reduced . if they release the service to public, a sudden jump of the number for users mean a greater problem to deal with, where as invitation only is well planned for the website.
