What is the CD Key for XP Professional SP1a. I have a legal cd, but I can't seem to find the key?

start->run-> type regedit -> hit enter

now locate this directory

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ Software\ MIcrosoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ ProductKey

You can try the Magical Jelly Bean utility. It may be a bit easier than digging through the registry.

Jennifer, sorry but this probably isn't a good place to ask that kind of question.

The best way to go about this is to contact Microsoft. If you have a legit copy of Windows XP and registered with them initially, then they might be able to help - or if not, you can purchase a license without the software for around $45 or so.

It should be on the container that the CD came in. If you threw it away you will have to call Microsoft and explain what happened to get another one. You cannot upgrade that software without the proper CD key. You also cannot install the software without it.

the CD key is on the genuine sticker (A Certificate of Authenticity (COA). then again....this might help.
