Mary Ludwing Hays McCuley, born in 1773-4 in New Jersey, and died January 22, 1832 in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. An, artilery wife Mary, (Molly Pitcher) fought in Valley Forge with her husband ,Williams Hays. Earning her name as Molly, Mary brought pitchers of water to the soldiers of Monmouth on June 28,1778 , and also teneded to the needs of the wounded. While she was watching her husband fell, Mary knew if she shouldn't help that the others wold be discouraged. Mary quickly stepped forward and grabbed the firing staff from her husband, being the second woman to ever handle a gun in a war ( first being Margaret Corbin). Mary, didnt give up she stayed behind that gun and acted as a matross (gunner) . In General Washington's eyes she was a hero and was issued a warrant as a noncomissioned officer, and later became Sergeant Molly. Today, Molly has a flag staff and a monument beside her grave attending to her corageous deed.

Probably "$$$"; she came from a wealthy family and was married before Georgie. She also had 4 children by her first marriage, but this interestingly enough, is not mentioned in George's bios.
So he probably married her for the money....for sure.......
