New proposal to reduce ties - remove players?

Most fans would prefer an alternative to penalty kicks to resolve tied games. They claim that the penalty kick method is like using free throws to resolve a basketball game. I agree.

I suggest that overtime be sudden death ("Golden Goal") and that it begin with the same number of players per team that finished regulation time. Every 5 minutes thereafter, one player is removed from each team. If after 40 minutes, neither team has scored, then go to penalty kicks. This method (of removing players) is much closer to actual playing conditions than using the penalty kick method.

Update:

Merely going to the Golden Goal after regulation would not solve the problem. In 1994, at least 2 games, INCLUDING THE FINAL, went to penalty kicks after the 2 "Golden Goal" overtimes. At least playing with fewer players is more similar to the actual game than penalty kicks. The problem with further extening the overtimes is that the players are exhausted.

I agree wholeheartedly. It is after all a team game!! The previous alternative - in european club competitions - was tossing a coin. They even made mistakes with that.

Even though no one likes the idea of winning/losing a game on penalty kicks, that is the most ridiculous idea that I've ever heard. However, I believe that the Golden Goal in extra time gives the game more of an edge.

I believe the solution is much simpler. Keep the 2 , 15 minute OT's, then go to a 30 minute golden goal. Keep going to 30 minute golden goals, for each OT not scored.

Taking players away is just plain silly.

Soccer is fine the way it is. That's the sport. If you dont like it, then start your own league with all the modifications you like.
