Criminal sentencing?

I feel that judges should not sentence criminals. I think it should be done by the victim or family of the victim. Do you feel that this would make people think more about committing a crime if they had no idea what they would receive?

Update:

I think you are missing the fact that if the criminal thought they might actually be punished, thet they might not do the crime. Plus, who cares if they are overly punished? If they did something to someone that was doing nothing wrong, what the point?

That is exactly why we need Judges, who following guidelines. If you let victims judge or sentence those arrested for crimes, people would be put to death for minor crimes. The Justice System in the US is far from perfect, but it could be countless times worse.

I do feel, however, that when one is sentenced to death by a judge, the victim's family should be able to throw the switch or press the button...

Virginia (and other states I'm sure) has the jury sentence the wrongdoer. Not only does that give the community a greater say what constitutes a just sentence, it tends to increase criminal sentences because jurors are one-time players in the criminal justice system.

I think that is an ideal mix.

i think they should continue to go by the guidelines because although we have allot of guilty people in prison, how many do you think are innocent? And it does happen, would you want to sentence an innocent person to death?? I think not.... unless it is absolutely proven without a doubt the person committed the crime....

Personally i feel if they have proof the person committed the crime, they should hang them in the town square so we as tax payers don't have to feed, house and provide them with everything

I dont believe in this idea because it could cause some problems such as the family gettin too emotionally involved. There would ahve to be very strict guidlines such as duration of prison, death penalty, and there would bee too much emotion involved here.

It could also be seen as a lesser form of the death penalty. Keep in mind, some people are wrongly convicted!

I've always liked the idea of handing over rapists of girls to the family.....for however long the family deemed necessary.
