What are the best shrubs to use as a hedge in zone 6?

What is the plantings distance plant to plant?

Update:

A hedge that is 8' to 10' tall and a spread of not more than 8' would be great.

How high do you want the hedge to get? My favorite is the broadleaf evergreen, "Skip" Laurel. Prunus laurocerasus "Schipkaensis" grows 6-8' tall/wide. P.lauro. 'Otto Luyken' grows to 3' high with a 5' spread. The straight species grows to 12' with a similar spread. Ideal for sun or shade. They are great!

They hold their foliae all year round, have white flowers in mid-late spring and produce more blooms in late summer.

I'm in zone 6 as well and my favorite shrubs are boxwoods. They are very easy to maintain and during Christmas make excellent homemade wreaths. Make a visit to your local nursery and see what kind of shrubs they have that you will like. They will be able to give you the answers to how far apart they should be planted.

Boxwood, forsythia can be used as a hedge; they are easy and care free. Pompas grass, a little wild. Depending on if you want a neat and trim hedge or a privacy barrier.
