It's not like you will become anorexic simply because it hurts to eat. The first week maybe few weeks will be painful. They will tell you to take pain relievers, ibuprofen works just fine.

Eventually you will not notice them at all. Make sure you brush and floss constantly so you don't get stains on your teeth.

Also, when you go get the rubberbands changed or any brackets tightened you will be in pain again, take some medicine.

All in all it's worth it. Just remember to listen to what they tell you!!

well i have had braces before (i have a retainer now) and the first night your mouth feels really tight and it hurts really bad (the spacers hurt to, you get those before the braces if you need them) i only had to have my braces for about a year maybe because my teeth straightend really fast. the first night i had my bottom braces, the next morning they were completly straight. but this doesnt happen with all people. you wanna how how braces will feel? push your top teeth in alittle bit and hold it there. that is about what it will feel like only about 10 times worse. and when you have your braces you wont be able to eat pizza or any thing you can chew really. i just ate apple sauce, oatmeal, yogurt, ya kno the things you dont have to chew. so a couple months after you get your braces tightend, then they hurt again until the next month. i would say the easiest part of braces is near the last few months that you need them. when the tighten your braces it doesnt hurt afterwards, and when you go to get your retainer is like a dream come true! it doesnt hurt at all and you can take it out whenever you want.

and now that i have gone through braces, on myspace i get compliments all the time on how beutifull my smile is. and now i look at it and say, this was all worth it, because before i hated my teeth so when i smiled i never shown them and i looked like a retard in my pictures. but now i have a beutifull smile that everyone wishes they have. some people get surgury just to have a smile like me. so i think it was worth it.

The pain is not unbearable. It's a little uncomfortable, but not unbearable. You can take aspirin ot tylenol or something which helps. Having braces is no different than if you get a tooth pulled or some other kind of dental work. You'll be more comfortable eating soft foods for 2-3 days like soup until your mouth gets used to the braces. If you're about to get braces...don't panic. It;s really not that bad.

It's not that you won't feel like eating, but your mouth is sore for a little while after as well as after you go in for monthly appointments. Also, it's just an adjustment and you're learning what you can and can't eat, and adapting to that. I broke my braces on an apple once, which was when I realized I had to cut most of my fruits and veggies.

I always took a couple of ibuprofens before a visit to the ortho and that helped with the pain.

Take is from a former "metal mouth". It hurts to eat anything that requires a lot of chewing. I lived on Ramen noddles and soup for a while. After a couple of weeks, sometimes, a week, you will be able to eat normally.

    Some advice:

If you think the Orthodontist is tightening the wire to tight. TELL HIM! I didn't say anything and each time I woke up with two black eyes! Not Good!

Just remember: no popcorn, no gum, no "snacky foods", no corn on the cob! Oh, and keep a little ball of wax around, in case you do poop a wire. Opps, pop a wire.

Good Luck! I had them on for five years!

    Blessings,

No, not really. They don't hurt until after you get them on about 4 hours. They will throb a bit, but you can still eat bread products that are soft on your teeth. It's only later when you get braces, about a year more that you really won't feel like eating because they get so tight on your teeth. I hope this answers your question!

When you first get braces (and whenever they are tightened), your teeth hurt, so the thought of chewing isn't pleasant. Soft stuff, especially cool soft stuff like yogurt, works well. It will only last for a day or two, then you can eat anything not on your "forbidden foods" list.

at first you cant exactly feel your teeth so you really wont FEEL like eating but you will be hungry because it takes a while to get the braces on. try Tylenol

YES! Definitely. It really sucks. And then when you get them tightened, you'll want to die. I remember this one time I got them tightened and my parents took me out to dinner and I was starving. I couldn't eat anything because it hurt so bad and i started crying. Braces are well worth it though. After you get them off make SURE to wear your retainers like they tell you. I didn't and my bottom teeth are messed up again. And I'm really pissed at myself about it. And also if you slack on the retainers and then try to go back to them, it will hurt bad too.

When I had my braces I ate nothing but soup for 2 weeks. Then every month when I had them adjusted I ate soup for a couple of days. When they put them on and adjust them it puts a great deal of pressure on your teeth so they can move, so it makes your mouth very tender. Good Luck, it is really not that bad and the end result is worth it!
