Why do people support gay marriage?

Some people say it destroys the sanctity of marriage, but hasn't divorce and adultery already done that?

Others state it is a sin, but the Bible has only four implied admonishments against homosexuality and over 350 admonishments against heterosexuality. If marriage is a sin, then in theory the gay couple just has to find "God" and ask for forgiveness for their sins to get into heaven.

Then there is the argument that gays should have the rights of a married couple, but does not violate equal rights and the separation of church and state?

Who does gay marriage really hurt? The economy could definitely benefit from the money used and circulated for gay marriages?

I would like to know as many arguments supporting gay marriage as possible.

Marriage, as a legal arrangement has some very unique benefits.

When two adult people have arranged their lives together, both initmately and materially, all forms of governent have recognised these relationships. Spouses have unique rights, not limited to: transfer of property, acting gaurdian on behalf of an incapacitated spouse, sharing medical and retiree benefits. In these contractual situations, it seems cruel and unfair to deny someone these rights. Imagine a person's spouse is in a traffic accident and knocked into a coma. The spouse would have no say is treatment, no right to remain in their house, lose access to monies and investments, lose any step children.

In the last century the phenomen of 'common law' marriage has been invented, recognized, and enforced. Opposite sex couples who share NO MORE THAN THE SAME ADDRESS for as few as 3 years have been 'made' man and wife for the purpose of divorce! That includes court ordered alimony to what may be only a friend or roomate. These people did NOT declare themselves married EVER yet their relationship is treated as such. This a more real danger to 'marriage'

I support gay marriage. The choice 2 adults make about their lives have serious consequences, they WILL SEEK THE PUBLIC'S COURT to solve some of their problems. By denying them marriage, they are also denied equal protection of the law. Certainly if common law marriage can be created retroactively for man-woman realtionships, then certainly 'marriage' is pilable enough for same sex COUPLES to be recognized as married by the state.

What ever religious people have to say about marriage, I respect, as long it remains in the context of their religion and those who freely choose to practice it.

    Marriage is a social construction.

For some, it has been a tribal matter.

For some, it has been about pre-arrangements.

For some, it has been about breeding and reproducing.

For some, it has been about romance, love, and devotion.

For some, it has been about legal matters, taxes, and health matters.

For some, it has been about some of all of the above.

Gays and Lesbians can handle it.

They have shown that they can lead children to adulthood.

They have shown that they can manage wealth.

They have shown that they can build admirable relationships.

They have shown that they can add civility and improvements to communities

The whole world is not going to become Gay when Gay Marriage is legalized.

The end of the human race is not going to start when Gay Marriage is legalized.

Moral problems of harm and danger to society will not be inevitable consequences from Gay Marriages.

y shouldn't they? the gay community has been around ever since the beginning of time (they have just been in the closet until very recently when society started accepting them) and yet they have been denied equal rights longer than woman have. woman officially earned their equal rights only a few decades ago, but gays have only been struggling towards that goal for little over two decades. they need more time ofcourse to get organized and become more accepted by the rest of the community, but it WILL happen someday. their dream will be realised and just as the feminism groups rebelled and got granted what they were demanding, so too will the gay community!

People support gay marriage because they are gay. I don't personally see anything wrong with a person's orientation as long as they choose to love then it doesn't really matter who they love. It is not an easy thing to accomplish. I don't believe in gay rights groups and such nonsense. What a person does with their lover should be between them and thier lover. Not broadcasted and requested special treatment for. Did you know that in Ancient Greece great male rulers prefered the company of little boys in thier bedrooms? Sick I know, why do you think the society failed?

I think that if someone loves someone they should be able to commit to each other in the same ways as everyone else. It is not wrong to love so why is it wrong to marry someone if they are the same sex?? Just doesn't make sense to me. I am a married women and yes I am married to a man but I feel if you love someone you should be allowed to marry them, no matter what.

  • If gays aren't allowed the same rights as straight people then they also shouldn't have to pay taxes either because they shouldn't have to help the same government that denies their rights!

bcuz i mean they cant help there feelings. i mean i know religion doesnt support gay marriages or watever but i mean it doesnt go with your feelings. no matter what ur still going to have those feelings wether ur religion think its okay. and also another point is that no matter ppl will always b gay, ppl will always, murder, ppl with always steal, ppl will always have sex before marriage. u cant stop it. ppl are always going to b opposite from what u believe in. u may not think its rite but u can accept it for wat it is. its not going to change. and why is it anyones elses business for sexual orientation anyway. i dunno thats wat i think. i say if ur gay, rite on.
