I think so. I had a penpal for a couple of months, a really neat guy, and suddenly he stopped writing. I sent him one final confused and desperate letter, and his sister repsonded a short time latter. She told me the guy had killed him self. I was shocked, I never saw it coming. How she got into his mail, I've no idea, but I was glad to know what happened, even though I was deeply sad about his death. Sorry for your loss...

Well, email is very private. You might learn things he didn't want you to learn. I know I personally would rather my family didn't read my email if something happened to me. I mean what would they really get from it? In the end I guess it just depends on how close you all were and how private he was. What I am trying to say is that it is a personal call.
