What's the best way to get muddy pawprints out of the carpet?

So my husband just let our two big dogs in from the backyard and they went thundering throughout our house, over the light colored carpet, with dirty/muddy paws. What is the best way to get this out? It's not real wet, but should I try to vacuum it now, or wait until it dries, and then try to vacuum and clean it? We're renting and I'd really rather not lose our deposit due to carpet stains...

Wail till it dries THOROUGHLY, and then brush it with a stiff dry brush, then vacuum. It should be gone unless the mud is clay mud. Then it might leave a yellowish stain. Oxy Clean takes that out.

If you try to clean it wet, it will only get deeper into the carpet.

I own a bissel pro-heat carpet cleaner. Fresh messes on the carpet get hot water, a good cleaning solution (I've found Resolve is the best) and a rinse with some vinegar in the rinse water. I will NEVER be without a good carpet cleaner! Just pull it out of the closet, fill 'er up, and in a few minutes you've got a clean carpet. Greatest investment I've ever made!

I would let it dry and see what happens when you try to vacume it. Mud usually rubs into the carpet over time anyways it doesn't really stain it. It depends on what kind of carpet and so on.

Let it dry and thenvacume. Use some pet fresh from arm&hammer.

At least this is what I do and it cleans the carpet and freshens the house.
