ANY BARTENDERS OUT THERE? I have a vodka martini question!?

What are the best kinds of vodka and vermouth to use for a vodka martini? Also, is there such a thing as cocktail olives or will any old olives from the grocery store do? A coworker is returning to college and his favorite drink is a vodka martini so I am getting him a set of martini glasses with a martini shaker and I also want to get him the makings of some great martinis for a good luck/going away present.

the first question you need to ask yourself... what kind of vodka martini does he like??? there are so many different kinds. any vodka will work, but obviously the more premium you buy, the smoother it will be. i would recommend grey goose. any vermouth is good, but i like martini and rossi. you want dry vermouth, not sweet. any olives will work, but if you go to a liquor store, they have so many different types, such as blue cheese stuffed, anchovy stuffed, etc. that way you will have a larger selection to choose from.

These guys are on to it. Olives with pimento is the best. Kettle One, Grey Goose and Absolut are the most popular request for vodka. There are newer trendy vodka's out there, but you could stick with those. As for vermouth, get the basic. It really doesn't make to much different. Really, a martini is just vodka, shaken in ice poured over very little vermouth. Don't mix the vermouth with the vodka. A lot of bars skip the vermouth these days.

I'm a dirty martini drinker. The best vodka I've found for them is called Three Olive vodka. For olives, any green olive really works but the big fat ones are fun sometimes. I have these cute little olive skewers for my martini set. The vermouth I use is a dry vermouth... I can't recall the name at the moment, but it's in a green colored bottle. As for the the martini set, glass sets are fabulous, but mine have a tendency to get suctioned shut for some reason.

I watched a special on Vodka's and Skyy is the best on all accounts. When making a Martini, make sure your glass is well chilled. When using Vermouth....place ice in your shaker. Pour a 1/4 jigger of Dry Vermouth over ice and coat well and strain. Now you pour your Vodka over the ice and stir gently. You don't want to shake your martini because it is a clear liquid and it will make it cloudy. Before straining...place your Olive, a large Spanish is best I think, in your well chilled glass. Now enjoy! Cheers!!

  • Vodka's-The smoothest would be Kettle one, then absolute, then a "well" vodka (McCormick).

If your looking to save some money, go for the well vodka. If your coworker likes it spicey, go for the Absolute Peppar vodka.

    Vermouth's-Doesn't really matter.

Cocktail Olives-There just larger green olives. Go for something different like olives stuffed with bleu cheese or hot peppers. You can find those at your local grocery store.

    Good Luck and Enjoy!!

Absolut, Smirnoff or Iceberg are great for the Vodka. Regular old olives from the grocery store are just fine as well.

Kettle One or Grey Goose are really good.

As for olives.. get queen Spanish olives.. there big and you can get them with many things inside, such as jalapeno, garlic, and anchovies, but best to stick with pimiento. I know nothing about vermouth.

All of the above mentioned vodkas are good. With a good vodka you won't need vermouth.
